Best Workplaces for Commuters Fortune 500 Companies

Best Workplaces

The average commuter spends 46 hours stuck in traffic each year. Traffic congestion costs Americans over $63 billion dollars annually- over $825 per year for each commuter. To acknowledge employers who offer exceptional commuter benefits to reverse this trend of increased driving time, employee stress, and air pollution, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) created the Best Workplaces for Commuters (BWC) from the Fortune 500 Companies (BWC F500). In September 2004, EPA announced the first list of Best Workplaces for Commuters from the Fortune 500 Companies (BWC F500), recognizing employers offering the most outstanding commuter benefits like transit pass subsidies, car or vanpool incentives, and telecommuting programs.

PRR developed a comprehensive media outreach campaign to raise awareness for the program and highlight employer benefits of "making" the list, such as tax incentives. PRR worked with EPA and Eastern Research Group to create a national media relations plan to announce the Best Workplaces for Commuters from the Fortune 500 Companies list. Using program messaging and facts highlighting congestion and air quality issues, PRR created press materials that illustrated the relevance of the BWC F500 program nationwide. The 2004 Best Workplaces for Commuters from the Fortune 500 Companies media campaign had unprecedented success, achieving mass market penetration with over 330 media placements. On the day of the announcement, news stories ran on national and local broadcasts including CNN, CNBC, and MSNBC. Major print stories announcing the 2004 BWC F500 list appeared in daily newspapers including USA Today, The Washington Post, Rocky Mountain News, and the San Francisco Chronicle. Additionally, PRR secured news stories with the Associated Press, Reuters, and the San Jose Mercury News that resulted in syndicated print, online and broadcast stories nationwide. A cross-section of the top 50 media hits for this campaign alone earned approximately $850,000 in media value and generated more than 23 million gross impressions. The campaign earned a Totem Award from the Public Relations Society of America.

“PRR's nationwide media relations campaign has helped people find employers that offer exceptional commuter benefits ”
